TRAILS COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
September 3, 2009
Attendees: Denny Nackoney, John Schuler, Joan Gaughan, Miguel Lessing, Diane Hall, Bob White
At the beginning of the fiscal year we had $8300 in capital of which $3750 is committed to the sign upgrade, which should be finished in late September, and the Morses Pond steps project which also be completed in September. We also have $4000 in the Operating account and $3800 in the Gift account. We should approve the FY11 Capital Budget at the October Meeting. I have attached a copy of the proposed~FY11 capital budget for approval. If there are any ideas for specific FY11 projects, they should be included.
We are very concerned about the graffiti on the Waban Arches. We will be taking a multi-pronged approach to address this issue.Denny will contact the MWRA to get their perspective on the problem. John will speak with the Historical Commission and learn if the Arches can be included in the Historical Register. If approved by the MWRA, Bob B will write an article for the Townsman highlighting the history of the Arches and the graffiti problem. Bob W will talk to the High School and learn if cleaning the arches could be included in a public service project.
After the meeting, the Contractor, the NRC, the DPW~and I met at the State St parking lot. We agreed on several improvements to Brook Path as it passes the parking lot including; moving the Doggie Bag pole back from the Sidewalk (Kent W from the DPW thought that the Map House would not be damaged by snow plows); the Contractor will move some plantings, the big rock, and a sign post out of the path, the Contractor will make the pathway more level; the wood chips near the football field will be removed; a pedestrian gate will be installed near the baseball field. I will remove our post and put arrows on the new fence posts.
We voted to not proceed with the Peirce Hill project. The short path that would be created was not worth time and effort required.
The DCR held a public hearing discuss the approaches to the Lower Falls Railroad Bridge. The DCR is completing construction documents. Newton and Wellesley wil be responsible for the approaches on their sides of the river.
The Sudbury Path has been rerouted through the Babson College Campus and away from Wellesley Ave. The Country Club has marked the path parallel with Wellesley Ave and installed a crosswalk on Forest St. The Crosstown Trail has been rerouted around the Duck Pond.
Diane will schedule a brush dispersal project on the Crosstown Trail.
If you are available for Kid's Trail Day on the 20th, please contact Joan.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday October 8th at 7:30. I may be out of town, if I am, a volunteer to take the minutes will be needed.
