Trails Committee Minutes 04/09/2009
TRAILS COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
April 9, 2009

Attendees:  Denny Nackoney, Len Poitras, Jim Elliot, Bob Brown, Miguel Lessing, Rina Rub, Joan Gaughan, Tim Anderson, Peter Rovick, Bob White

Citizens: Peter Krieg, Arthur Krieg

Eagle Scout candidate, Peter Krieg presented his preliminary plans for improving the drainage on the Guernsey Path near the Sanctuary.  His plan calls for placing five or six perforated pipes under the path to collect water and transfer it to the drainage ditch nearby.  He will need approval from the DPW's Engineering Department as well as the Wetland Committee.  I will set up a meeting with Engineering.  Peter will need a permit from the Wetlands Committee if the project is to proceed.

DCR's funding for the Lower Falls Bridge has been moved from their Matching Gift program to the Accelerated Bridge program.  While there is neighborhood opposition in Newton to completing the bridge, the DCR is planning to complete this project and two other pedestrian bridges over the Charles connecting Newton to Weston.  The DCR will not work on the approaches to the Lower Falls Bridge, so the Towns will need to come up with those funds. The Wellesley Lower Falls Bridge Committee will explore funding options for the Wellesley side.

The DPW will construct steps on the Morses Pond Trail this summer.  We have agreed upon a scope of work and will let the Trails Committee know when work will be started.

The Town Accountant has asked that we spend all our FY2006 Capital carry-over, approximately $12,000 by the end of FY09, June 30th.  While it is highly unlikely that we will spend the entire amount, we have committed programs that will spend the money by the Fall.  Janet Bowser will request that the Accountant let us continue to carry-over the 09 funds.  Jim has sent Janet a budget showing the details.

On May 9th, between 9 and noon, the Wellesley Girl Scouts and a Troop of Boy Scouts will work in Centennial Reservation improving the Trails.  We will determine the scope of work prior to the 9th.  The DPW will provide mulch and tools.  If you are available, please attend.

Len will order Network Maps and all four sectional maps.

We continue to investigate the feasibility of a trail near Peirce Hill.

The next meeting will be Tuesday May 19th at 7:30.   We may schedule a walk  at 7:00 to look at alternatives to the Crosstown Trail near Town Hall.

I have attached the latest revision of the Project List.  Comments are appreciated.
