Trails Committee Minutes 05/27/2008

TRAILS COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
May 27, 2008

Attendees: Denny Nackoney, Bob Brown, Miguel Lessing, Lewis Collins, Len Poitras, Tim Anderson, Joan Gaughan.
I will be a member of the Town's Walkway Committee. This initiative, led by the Planning Board, and with help of a consultant, will develop a process to determine when walkways should be created, improved or removed. Please let me know if you have any walkways that you would like put on the list. Be advised that there is no timetable yet.

I will be attending a Needham Traffic Advisory Committee Meeting on June 11th to discuss a crosswalk on the Sudbury Path across Rt 135.

Five thousand new maps are available in the Trails Committee drawer in the NRC Office. We will use up the old maps before we start using the new ones. Thank you Len, for getting Wellesley College to print the maps at a very good price. We will install the laminated maps on the holders on Saturday June 14th at 8:00 am. Let me know if you are available and I will set up teams. The money for the maps will come from our FY08 operating budget.
We are sharing our website access in the Virtual Town Hall Account with the NRC Office. I will contact the Selectmen's Office and attempt to get our own account.

Jon Lansing and Tyler Boyd, Wellesley High Seniors, have completed their project by rerouting a section the Boulder Brook Reservation Trail, and cleaning up six sections of trails which were in need of major clean ups.

The Committing unanimously approved $2800 for the upgrading of our two major signs by Garrity Carved Signs. Stephen Garrity was the builder of the signs. We will take this money from our capital budget.

At our next meeting we will decide on our Fall walks schedule including a Sunday Kid's Trail Day.

We have an estimate of $242,000 from the DCR to repair the railroad bridge in Lower Falls. We will continue to ask National Development to provide some funds for the repair of this important link to Newton. We will also keep in contact with the DCR regarding their intentions.

Denny will work with the Wetlands Committee on our relocation of the lower bridge in Centennial Reservation. I will work with the DPW to set up a new mowing pattern. Both these projects should move the current path away from a wet area.

I have attached a copy of the Map House locations, showing existing and proposed Doggie Bag Dispensers. The NRC will discuss funding the bags at their next meeting on June 10th. If they approve the expense and we can get volunteers to replenish the bags we will order new dispensers. In the last order, the bags were folded and may not fit as well as previous receipts.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday July 1st at 7:30.
Bob White
Chairman Wellesley Trails Committee
