HOW DO I APPLY FOR A SIGN PERMIT?

You can apply for a sign permit in three ways:

1. PHONE/MAIL: call 1 781 431 1019 Ext. 234. The awning and sign application form, a check list of materials to be submitted to the DRB and copies of the sign regulations will be mailed to you.

2. INTERNET: download the application form, design guidelines, application check list and design / sign regulations from the Town of Wellesley Website. You can also e-mail your request for information or application form to either lhansen@ci.wellesley.ma.us or mconlon@ci.wellesley.ma.us

3. PAY US A VISIT: come to Planning Department [Town Hall, Lower Level] between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

WHAT DO I NEED FOR A COMPLETE SIGN APPLICATION?

The following materials are required to make the application complete:

9 sets of:

» Completed application form.
» Written description of the sign.
» Scaled, dimensioned drawing of the sign/awning including lettering, borders and other design elements [min. scale 3/4"].
» Location plan for standing signs showing distance setback from property lines [min. scale 1/16"].
» Drawing of façade showing proposed placement of signs/awnings in relation to trim/significant architectural elements [min scale 1/ 4;"].

Plus:

» Color photographs of the façade and adjacent buildings.
» Samples of all colors proposed to be used on sign or awning.
» application requires special permit 1 check for $150 is required. If application is by right 1 check for $50 is required. Make all checks payable to the “ Town of Wellesley”.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A DESIGN REVIEW APPLICATION?

The following materials are required to make the application complete:

For all projects:

9 sets of:

» Written description of proposed change.
» Description of materials exposed to view.
» Scaled elevation drawings.
» Landscape and grading plan showing all improvements.
» Plan showing outdoor lighting and signage.

Plus:

» Color photographs.
» Samples of materials to be used.

In addition, major construction and PSI shall include:

» Scaled site plan.
» A three dimensional model of the project.

Scaled drawings shall show:

» Details of major architectural elements.
» Dimensions of building or addition.
» Any mechanical equipment on roof.

Scaled site plan shall show:

» Existing and proposed boundary lines including lot dimensions and area.
» Location of all existing and proposed structures.
» Location of existing and proposed driveways, parking areas, handicapped ramp, and all site improvements.
» Location of zoning lines and existing zoning districts.
» Layout of all parking spaces, including dimensions, total number [standard, compact and handicapped].
» Location of all open space including existing and proposed landscaped areas [show all major trees including street trees].
» Details of landscaping indicating the types and size of trees and shrubs to be planted; and how existing trees will be protected during construction.

Required application fee is $150 for minor construction and by-right antenna projects and $300 for major construction and special permit antenna projects. All checks payable to “Town of Wellesley”.

WHEN SHOULD I SUBMIT APPLICATIONS FOR REVIEW BY THE DESIGN REVIEW BOARD?

All complete applications are due one week prior to Design Review Board meetings at noon.

WHEN DOES THE DESIGN REVIEW BOARD MEET?

The Design Review Board meets every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., Town Hall, Lower Level. The Board's meeting announcements, agenda and minutes are posted on this website.
