Highway is responsible for ensuring safe vehicular and pedestrian access for the public and emergency services (police, fire, ambulance) during the winter. Highway's responsibilities include clearing approximately 220 lane miles of streets and 60 miles of sidewalks. Activities include plowing streets, sidewalks, school yards and recreation areas, sanding or salting streets and sidewalks, removing snow and ice from
commercial areas and in front of churches and funeral homes, and repairing damage from plows. The quantity of road salt used in the Town’s two watershed areas is minimized to protect these water supplies.
